Lisa Doby (FR / USA)Lisa Eileen Doby was born on November 22, 1975 in Columbia, South Carolina. She began music at the age of ten, playing the violin and then the trumpet in orchestras and bands from elementary school through college. Lisa finally heard her true voice and talent for singing at Wake Forest University, where she met LaDonna Hairston (John P Kee), and the two formed the gospel a cappella group Nishati.
During a study abroad program in France Lisa began touring with Gene ‘Mighty Flea’ Connors (Lionel Hampton) as a soloist and backing vocalist. She fell in love with Europe and moved to France, where she quickly passed an audition and was chosen as backing vocalist and dancer for Patricia Kaas (Sony/Bmg). Lisa had never stopped writing her own songs and after the yearlong tour, decided to pursue her career at the front of stage.
Very quickly Lisa began making a name for herself with her first band, Mo’ Bettah, as an outstanding vocalist with a charisma and charm audiences love. Lisa’s tours would take her to prestigious festivals and venues (Montreux, Enghein, Tabarka) and on to share stage with some of the greatest names in music: Ray Charles, Solomon Burke, Joe Cocker, Véronique Sanson…
Lisa always felt that stage was the true test of a true artist, and so she never ran after record companies for ‘a deal’ to be ‘here today and forgotten tomorrow’. Now that she has proved to herself and to audiences far and wide that she is an artist of international caliber, she is ready to move onto the next and highest level.
Lisa’s singing and talent is rare and refreshing, her musical expression genuine and even palpable. Each performance is a unique musical journey into real songs that audiences discover and then sing along with. Lisa has had the luck and wit to continue doing ‘her thing’, far away from the reality tv singers, and fabricated bubble gum hip-pop. Her tunes are gritty, sometimes sassy and truly unforgettable. High power electric guitars and rhythms that make the body move are all necessary components to support the voice that seems huge coming from such a little lady… Here is the type of artist the likes of which the industry has not seen since the arrival of some of it’s greatest. She has been compared to Janis Joplin, Betty Davis… Lisa Doby is the new priestess of Soul. In 2006 her new album Free to be was released on Jazzhaus Records. | |
