Popa Chubby (USA)

Line Up:

Popa Chubby: guitars / vocals
Simeon McDonald: drums
Erik Boyd: bass

Born Ted Horowitz, Popa Chubby is a true native son of the Big Apple. He was born in 1960 in the Bronx and grew up in a neighbourhood made famous by Robert DeNiro in the movie A Bronx Tale. His early memories of hearing the juke box playing the hits of early sixties soul and R&B made a lasting impression on him. To this day the musical influence of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye are ever present in Popa’s music.

At age sixteen he picked up his first guitar and never put it down. His fingers bled from trying to pick out the blues licks he heard second hand from the rockers who played them. In the late 70’s Popa was hired by Punk Rock godfather Richard Hell for a world tour. With the 1980’s upon him, Popa played any and all styles of music he could, the education helping him to survive as a working musician. Chubby was hired for a world tour and asked to contribute his blues-inflected guitar playing to Pierce Turner’s album The Sky and The Ground. Popa worked with Pierce throughout the late 80’s.

In 1990 the Popa Chubby Band was born. The Name was taken from an impromptu jam with Bernie Worell, one of the founding members of ‘70s psychedelic rock and R&B group Parliament-Funkadelic.

Popa Chubby’s music, forged in the toughness that is New York City, takes blues to the cutting edge, where it highfives its contemporary cousins rock, rap, and hip hop. With his razor sharp, biting guitar, vocals from the gut, and top-notch skill as a songwriter, Popa Chubby artfully combines the rootsiness of blues with the more modern urban elements of today’s popular music.

Currently Popa Chubby has released "Deliveries After Dark". It debuted on the Billboard Blues Charts at #4. Popa Chubby is a true blues legend. Keep your eyes and ears open! Popa Chubby’s new album on the label Dixie Frog will be available with the beginning of his next tour.

The new Popa Chubby opus “Vicious Country” is totally Country music and Rockabilly oriented, a kind of travel through the 50’ and the 60’ and a tribute to the famous Sun label.

Press

„Chubby has the fast-fingered facility and the unflagging adrenaline for such an approach. But he's much more interesting when he abandons his bar-band routine for something more idiosyncratic: the understated Piedmont blues of "You Can't Stop Love," the reggae-inflected "Woman in My Bed Dub" and the surf-instrumental version of "Theme From 'The Godfather’." Washington Post

„ Deliveries After Dark is also defiantly not a purist record. This is a blues rock record that has the sound and songs of classic rock radio rather... This is bold, loud music made for the joy of it and it can be heard in every note.” Josh Hathaway

Tourperiod

'Universal Breakdown Blues' European Tour 2013

10.06. PL-Gdynia, Klub Muzyczny Ucho - CANCELLED!

(We are sorry to announce that Popa Chubby had to cancel the above mentioned show for health reasons. Chubby sustained a hairline fracture to his shinbone during  the German tour. He was advised by a doctor to avoid flying the next 6 weeks, because this is the worst thing for his shinbone he could do.  As travelling to Poland from the south of France would have meant 3 flights there and 2 back home, so he had no choice but to make the decision to cancel).
